    Narrowing of the airway is due to:

  • TMJ anomalies
  • cleft palate
  • glossoptosis
  • micrognathia and retrognathia

In severe cases, choanal atresia is present. Choanal atresia is the blockage of the inferior openings of the nasal cavity or choanae. These defects combine and can potentially result in acute respiratory distress.
